I started researching my family in 1998, and has been my passion ever since. I hope you can find some information to connect my family to yours. It's always nice to meet new cousins!

Notes from stepson Donald:
Alice Miller was my step mother, my dad Martin O Hjortland married her whe he was 40 and she was 18, approx 1936. She was the only mother I ever knew as my mother died in childbirth when I was 4. They had a very good life together for many years; dad died in 1971 and Alice in 1991. I never knew Frank Miller as Alice’s mother was then married to Colonel Wixom. We called her Bobby. They lived with us for a number of years in Long Lake, IL. She was a good hearted women but a tough taskmaster. Colonel was a big guy, his ring was too big for my thumb. I remenber one instance where my father and I were trying to lift a large concrete flowerpot and could not. Colonel walked over picket it up and said “where do you want it?”
I knew Alice’s brother Theron was killed in a plane crash but I never heard anything about his wife not wanting him to go. As you know Nelly died very young. Art and Ira were both pretty heavy drinkers. I remember one time Art got into a bad way, drinking and no money and Dad took him and his wife and kids in and they lived with us for a while. Dad gave him a job and he was supposed to lay off the the booze but it didn’t work out and they moved on.
Alice always said she was Scotch-Irish, among some other things. She always said she was a Mongrel so when daughter Sondra was filling out grade school papers she put Mongrel for her mothers ancestry.
