Departure Dec. 26, 1846 Ship Mayflower, port of  departure, Rotterdam
Berend Jan Graven, age 62, died enroute
Giezena, his wife, age 64 female
Berent Hendrik Graven, age 34, farmer, from Holland
Aleida, his wife, age 31
Arend Jan, age 5
Hendrik, age 3
Hendrika Graven, age 28 (I think this is Berent’s sister, her husband and children are next):

Garrit Jan Vervelde, age 37 male, from Holland
Janna? Gessina, female, cannot read age (8 or 9?)
Derk Jan?, male age 2
Grada Aleida 6 months            ”Dead” written in Vervelde column, in same row as Grada
Garrit Vervelde age 63

They had 4 “chist”, which is some sort of trunk or container. One hundred ten were aboard, four passangers are listed as dead on the manifest. The identity of the deceased Berend Jan is not known; Family history has Barent’s father’s name as Arent Jan, however the age would match and the wife’s name is correct. There was an Arent Jan Graven that emmigrated to the US listed on ancestry.com, his age is 63 and he arrived in 1846, but does not indicate exact date of arrival or ship name. The only other possibility is that this deceased Berent is an uncle, but coincidentally then is the same age as his father.

Berent’s bother Gerrit emmigrated to the US June 5, 1846 with his wife and two children; no other Graven members traveled with them.  Berent, his sister’s family and perhaps parents traveled together on this trip.

It appears that Berent and Aleida were the second members of Aleida’s family to come to the US, as her younger brother Christian came in September 1846. Aleida gave birth to daughter Gesiena shortly after their arrival in New York. After arriving, they settled in Milwaukee initially, where Berent worked as a laborer, likely to save money before later moving to Sheboygan county to farm. In an article in the Sheboygan Press, April 29, 1929, they discuss the history of settlement in Holland Township, and B.H. Graven is listed as an early settler, section 2 in 1850. The family likely moved there shortly after the July 1850 census.
