Funeral For Well-Known Tobacco Dealer Held From St. Joseph’s Cathol.ic Church Thrusday.
Charles E. Sweeney, 77, a very well known tobacco dealer in southern Wisconsin, died, Tuesday morning, May 6, at 5:30 o’clock at his home after a five months illness. Mr Sweeney was born February 29, 1864, in the twon of Porter and was the son of Miles and Mary Sweeney. HIs early life was spent in Porter township. He had been engaged in the leaf tobacco business in this city since 1885, and had represented the tobacco firm of H. Fendrich, Inc. of Edwardsville, Ind, since 1919. Mr Sweeney also owned several farms in the vicinty of Edgerton and took great interest in their operation. He possessed exceptional wit and personality, and was a friend of everyone. On June 5, 1889, he was united in mariage to Miss Mary Ellen Stafford in St. Joseph’s Catholic church in this city. The ceremony was performed by Father Boe. In 1939 Mr and Mrs Sweeney celebrated their golden wedding. They have been residents of this city for the past 44 years.
Surviving relatives are his widow; two sons, J. E. and Charles V. Sweeney, local attorneys, who have also been associated with their father in the tobacco business under the name of C.E. Sweeney and Sons; one daughter, Mrs Linton Austin, Boulder, Colo; two brothers, Hugh and John Sweeney, and one sister, Mrs. Kate Hyland, this city, and several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 8:30 o’clock in the home and at 9 o’clock in St Joseph’s Catholic church. Interment was made in St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery, with Father Raymond Foren officiating. The pall bearers were Messrs George, Paul and Miles Sweeney, John Hyland, Matt Roherty and Percy Hubbell.
