“Victim of Burns is Laid to Rest While Family is in Hospital”
The greatest danger of gasoline when when not properly handled was pittifully apparent as a mother and her 7 year old daughter lay suffering from burns in Memorial Hospital while funeral services for her husband were being held at Batavia.
Late Thursday afternoon, Charles Forbes, 71, prepared to fill a gasoline lamo in his home on County Trunk W in the Town of Scott southwest of Cascade. According to Coroner H.H. Heiden, he placed the lamp on the edge of the stove to fill it and set the gasoline can on the floor. When he lit the lamp he dropped the burning match on the gasoline can and a terrific explosion resulted.
The little home became an inferno, covering Mr. Forbes with flaming gasoline. His wife and daughter, Stella May, eascaped by running upstairs and jumping from a second story window. Then they bravely entered the flaming building and succeeded in dragging Mr. Forbes outside. He was terribly burned and taken to Memorial Hospital Thursday night where he died Friday at 9:45 p.m.
The coroner said today that the little girl is getting along nicely, and that Mrs. Forbes, while badly burned, is out of danger. The Cascade and Batavia fire Departments suceeded in saving the building.
