A small village near the borders of Colorado and Utah was named Tupper after him. He went to California where he staked a gold claim, but he continued to work as a scout, and spent several years hunting and trapping with Jim Hughes and Kit Carson. Later he went to Texas where he married Eliza Ferguson. After the Civil War, he was ordained as a minister in the Baptist Church and spent the remainder of his life as a circuit rider for the church.
