OBITUARY: Sheldon Mail, 20 April 1939.

James F. Sweeney, 77, of Sheldon, a former O’Brien county supervisor, passed away last Friday morning at 3:30 o’clock at his home at 1009 east Ninth street, after a four days illness with pneumonia.

James F. Sweeney was born September 10, 1861, in Rock county, Wisconsin, and passed away April 14, 1939, aged 77 years, 7 months and 4 days. He received his schooling in the country schools in the county of his birth.

October 5, 1886, he was married at Edgerton, Wis., to Miss Margaret Murphy and they lived in Dane county, Wisconsin, until 1892, when they moved to Sanborn. He had since made his home in O’Brien county, where he engaged in farming. He had been a resident of Sheldon many years and served as a county supervisor 11 years. Mr. Sweeney was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus lodge.

Seven children were born to Mr. Sweeney, one daughter and one son passing away. Mrs. Sweeney passed away October 18, 1920  and on May 24, 1924, he was married to Mrs. Mary Shea Addy, who survives.

Besides the widow, he is survived by five children: M. L. Sweeney of Jeffers, Minn., James Lloyd Sweeney of Milwaukee, Wis., John Lorenzo Sweeney of New Rockford, Ill., (Ruth) Mrs. Leo Harrington of Sanborn and (Golde) Mrs. Leslie M. White of Sheldon. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Kate Hyland of Edgerton, Wis., and four brothers, Dan F. Sweeney of Milwaukee and Charles E., Hugh T. and John M. of Edgerton.

Funeral services were held Monday morning, April 17, at 9 o’clock at St. Patrick’s Catholic church, with Rev. C. P. Sweeney of Fort Dodge, a nephew of the deceased, as celebrant of the Requiem  High mass, assisted by Rev.
George Cooke and Rev. David McGoey.  Music was furnished by the choir with Mrs. Peter Pohlen at the organ. Pallbearers were Frank Hurd, Ed Bohan, J. B. O’Donnell, Frank Dougherty, Ray MGrath and Frank Burns, with burial in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
