In trying to narrow down who James’ parents may be, if you assume he was born in Mass., there were 45 seperate Webb families living in MA in 1800. According to son Merritt’s biography, James and Welthy Webb were both born in Mass, and “removed to NY at an early age”. This could mean any number of things in reference to James’ age at the time they moved. By 1810, there are 41 Webb families in Mass., and 114 Webb families in NY state. Since only heads of household are named, trying to narrow down those families which had a son under age 5 is daunting. There were 4 Webb’s in Jefferson Co NY in 1810; William, Alfred, David and Freeman, and all 4 had sons under age 5.

James and Wealthy are listed as members of the “Cascade Class” United Methodist Church 1862, 1863 and again in 1869 (no interim records). The Cascade branch had only 12 members in 1862-63, and Charles Abers was the “leader”. The youngest daughter (Innes or Eunice) married an Abers, likely a relation to Charles.  A new church, the “Onion River ” Methodist church was completed in 1870, and the other congregations merged. According to church records 10/1/1870: The splendid Methodist Episcopal church at Onion River is nearing completion. Cost $4,000″.
