Family Notes:
When John was done with only second or third grade, he had to leave school to help with the work at home. One of his jobs was plowing, and once he had a tame crow that would sit on his shoulder and fly down and pick up the worms as they were exposed. For a few years John worked up north near Crivitz, WI doing farm work and working as a lumberjack. Here he met his wife. They moved to Elkhart Lake, Wi and John worked at a resort called Sharp’s. They then moved back to Sheboygan to help Folmar Sr. with the farm, although he had promised Carrie they would never farm for a living since neither cared much for it. After Folmar died, they bought out the brother’s and sisters share of the house on Rt. 3 and lived there the rest of their lives. John’s mother Catherina lived with them upstairs.
John and Carrie were married 14 years whe they had their only child, June. At the time of her conception, John had a broken arm in a cast and couldn’t do much farm work. His brother George came to help out, and Carrie got some teasing by her friends saying that George was the real father.
In later years, after Carrie died, John lived alone in the house. The house never had plumbing in it, even as John lived there into the the 1950’s, which required carrying water from the well in the barn and visiting the outhouse even in the dead of winter. It did eventually have electricity, but not for many years.
