Obituary:

Mrs. Joe Oonk: Funeral services for Mrs. Joe Oonk, 88, a former Oostburg resident who died Sunday afternoon at Heritage Nursing Center in Sheboygan, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Reformed Church, Oostburg. The Rev. John Olthoff will officiate at the church service which will follow a 1:15 family service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Town of Holland. The former Josie Navis was born Jan. 22, 1888 in the Town of Holland, the daughter of Garret and Henrietta Graven Navis. On March 6, 1906 she was married to John Veldboom at the home of her parents in the Town of Holland. They lived in Oostburg after mariage where Mr. Veldboom was employed as a carpenter. He died in 1941. On Dec. 5, 1951 she was married to Joe Oonk in Oostburg. The couple lived in Oostburg for 23 years before moving to Pine Haven Christian Home, Sheboygan Falls, 2 1/2 years ago. Mrs. Oonk was a member of First Christian Reformed Church and its Martha Society. Survivors are her husband: two sons, Gordon Veldboom Sr. of Oostburg and Ellsworth of Janesville; a step-son, Melvin Oonk of Oostburg; four step-daughters, Mrs. Reuben Bruggink and Mrs. Beatrice Bloemers, both of Oostburg, Mrs. Ronald Bimmel of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Delmar Hilbelink of Denver, Colorado; four grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 23 step-grandchildren. A daughter, a son, a granddaughter, two brothers and four sisters preceeded her in death. Friends may call at the Krostag Funeral Home, Oostburg, after 4 p.m. today until 11 a.m. Wednesday and at the church from noon until the time of services.

 

Misc: After her husband John’s death in 1941, their home was foreclosed on and sold later that year. She stayed in Oostburg until Nov. 1943, at which time she and son Ellsworth moved to Sheboygan, possibly because of work opportunities (article in Sheboygan Press 11/3/1943 stating she moved to Sheboygan)
