I started researching my family in 1998, and has been my passion ever since. I hope you can find some information to connect my family to yours. It's always nice to meet new cousins!

Marcus (Marquis, Mark) DeLafayette Tupper
Born: 19 Jun 1845, Boston, Ohio
Parents: Harvey Tupper and Joanna Willis/Wyllis
Marriage: 3/29/1868, Wealthy/Welthy/Worthy Ann Webb, civil ceremony, Sheboygan, WI
Children: Frank Harvey, George Arthur (twin), Orin/Oran C. (twin), William Marcus
Died: About 1880, age about 35, cause unknown; mentioned in his fathers obituary in 1883 that Marcus died “a few years ago’”
Buried: Location unknown, probably Sheboygan Co WI (last residence)
Occupation: Blacksmith, stated on son’s birth certificates. From the Sheboygan County Historical Review (1910), Glenbuelah, “As the farms in the vicinity of Glenbeulah became more developed, the services of blacksmiths came more into demand and one shop could not do all the work, so in 1873 M. Tupper opened another shop. For two years he conducted the shop and then for a year it
wus vacant.
Marcus’ uncle, Henry Newton Tupper, was a blacksmith before moving to Louisianna; likely Marcus learned the trade from him.
Data:
Believed to have died in Sheboygan Co, WI in a small township called Glenboulah near Sheboygan Falls.
Wealthy is listed as a widow by 1880, and 9 months pregnant at the time of the census on June 1st, so Marcus must have died between 1879 and 1880, as he (we assume) sired a child in the predeeding 9 months. The youngest of his four children, William, was born just 4 days after the 1880 census was taken. Marcus was not listed in the 1880 mortality schedule for Sheboygan or Fond du Lac counties, although should have been if he died in the 12 month period preceeding the 1880 census. His father’s obituary in 1883 indicates that “Marcus died about 3 years ago.”
Marcus served in the Civil War, Union Army, 1st Wisconsin Infantry, CO I
Enlisted 10/23/1861- mustered out 10/13/64. Served with with his future father-in-law, James Webb. During this time period, 157 men from his regiment were killed, another 143 died of disease or accident (from Civil War Regiments on Ancestry.com).
No gravestone can be found for Marcus, probably decayed. The rest of the Tuppers are buried in the Farmin cemetery in Lima township, near their property.
Marcus’ name is listed in Tupper’s of America book in the french vernacular - Marquis DeLafayette. On his marriage certificate and census from 1860, he is Marcus or ML (Layfayette instead of DeLayfayette). One of his sons lists him as Mark in a marriage certificate.
Census:
1880 Sheboygan, Greenbush Co:
Wealtha Tupper, age 28, mother, widowed, born WI, both parents born NY
Frank age 10 (census taker wrote mother again, instead of son)
Oren age 8 son (twin)
George age 8 son (twin)
Harvey age 79 grandfather (Marcus’ father)
Marcus is not listed in 1875 Greenbush or Mitchell Sheboygan Co. townships in the WI census, possibly still living in Fond du Lac county. The state censuses taken between the federal censuses are not indexed, and more difficult to locate people unless you know exactly where they lived. Children George and Oran, born in 1872, have birth certificates on file in Sheboygan County, although the Tuppers In America book lists them as being born in Fond du Lac County. The family lived in townships in both counties that were within a few miles of the county line either way.
1870 WI Census: There is a Marshal Tupper (this is likely Marcus), in FonduLac Co, Auburn Township: (taken 6/1/1870Marshal Tupper, age 24, married, Blacksmith, value of real estate $150, value of personal estate $52, born Ohio; Sarah wife, age 18, keeping house, born WI, Frank age 11/12, born July 1869 in WI. Wife’s name should be Wealthy, not Sarah, although age is correct (Wealthy’s mother’s name is Sarah). The rest of the information fits well. Auburn township is right across the border from Sheboygan Co, less than 5 miles from Glenboulah.
