1850 US census, Sheboygan Co, Scott township: (no Merritt and Mary found in any census, possibly traveling from NY to Wi as census was taken.) Merritt’s parents, newly living in Wisconsin, listed older brother James (newly married), and directly beneath him a female, age 21 named Merritta, also married within the last year. It is logical to assume that this Meritta is James’ new wife, but in all likelihood this is his brother Merritt, who happens to be age 21. Older brother James was actually still living in NY at that time; perhaps the Webb parents did not understand that only members actually living in the household were to be listed. Both brothers were newly married and either en route or soon to be leaving for Wisconsin. The census taker may have inadvertantly added the “a” to Merritt’s name.

”Biographical sketch in the “History of Steele & Waseca Counties”
“Merritt Webb is a native of Jefferson Co., NY, born March 21, 1829. His parents were James and Wealthy (Hutchinson) Webb, natives of Massachusetts. They removed to New York at an early age, and in 1849 settled in Sheboygan Co., WI. Merritt remained with his parents until 20 years of age, striking out in life for himself in Wisconsin. He followed farming in that State for fifteen years, then came to Minnesota and lived in Wabasha County one year, after which for two years he lived in Meriden Township, Steele County. He then purchased his present farmfrom John Sanborn, who had “claimed” it in 1854. Mr. Webb was married April 17, 1849, to Miss Mary C. Putnam, who was
born December 30, 1831, her grandfather being a son of General Putnam of Revolutionary fame. They have five living children: Frank C, born Nov. 27, 1850, Charles N, Born
