Neil/Neal Roherty
This picture was from Marie Sweeney Quisling; Ren and Gen Sweeney wrote notes on the back trying to decide who this picture was of. One name written, then crossed out, was Charles Sweeney. Someone else wrote “this is a Roherty”. Someone then wrote in large letters “Neil Roherty”. The photographer was B. B. Rice from Edgerton, WI. I doubt this is Neil as the man appears fairly young, and photographs were just not readily available until the 1870’s. Neil would have been 47 in 1870. In checking the census, the first time Benjamin B. Rice shows up is in 1880 and is listed as a photographer, age 35, in Edgerton. Neil would have been into his 50’s by this time and was said to have grayed prematurely, so this is clearly not Neil. It could be one of the Roherty children, or perhaps is really a Sweeney.

Neal with his brother, Hugh, emigrated to America in 1849. They first came to Hazleton,Penn. and were employed there for a number of years in the coal mines. Both brothers married while living in Hazleton, Penn.
Neal married Catherine Sweeney, who together with her 3 brothers, Myles, Matt and Hugh had emigrated from Co. Donegal, Ireland in 1845. Catherine was then 15 years old.
Hugh Roherty married Bridget Boyle, also an emigrant.
