Sweeney (Mac Suibhne)- The name

The Sweeneys, McSweeneys and the McSwineys are all the descendants

of gallow-glass warriors from Scotland who arrived in Ireland

in the 14th century as mercenaries and settled in County Donegal.

The form MacSweeney is found mostly in Munster where a branch of the family

was founded from migrants from Ulster.

The name is rated in the top fifty names in Ireland.
