Article from Sheboygan Press, April 7, 1930:
Ashford, Wisconsin- A three story chick hatchery erected last winter for M.P. Schill in which 2000 chicks were being brooded, and the dwelling house of William Mauel were reduced to ashes early Friday morning, resulting in a loss estimated at approximately $17,000. Fire departments from Campellsport and Lomira worked for several hours to save the village from destruction by the flames. The fire, it is believed, was started by burners used to warm the brooders. Everything was all right at 2 a.m. when Mr. Schill was in the hatchery, but at 3:30 am Alex Thelan and Frank Barth discovered the flames when they passed the place on a trip. Neighbors saved most of the furniture in the Mauel residence, and the members of the two fire departments remained until all danger of further damage was passed.
